 Satta Matka, the Marathi word 'Satta', in simple words, means 'Luck'. It originated from before the age of Indian Independence, when it was referred to as Ankada Jugar. The Marathi people believe that if you were able to get a glimpse at the auspicious hour during which the grain sattva was ripe, you could get lucky and win some money. 

This is the reason why they started static games. Initially it was just an affair of picking numbers and doing some calculations but over the years it has developed into something much more. In Maharashtra, Satta Matka is considered as one of the most significant lotteries conducted in the state. 

Besides the Maharaja Yatra and Ganesh Chaturthi being some of the important events, Satta Matka also occurs on the occasions of various important festivals of Maharashtra. A lot of Mumbaikars participate actively in these lotteries, which are organized by the local administration and the police authorities. There are also a large number of students who participate actively in the Satta Matka. This form of gambling is also very popular among youngsters as it is believed that students get the best return on their betting in case of the Satta Matka. Satta Matka is usually conducted over the telephone and not via the internet, since the latter is not considered a reliable medium. 

The tickets, which are distributed in this manner are usually kept in a Satta Matka case or Satta Matkari. The tickets are normally priced using a numerological formula, and the lucky numbers which are picked using the Satta Matka system are called Karpati.
